Airbrush Makeup
By Hobbipen Airbrush
With the arrival of HDTV, airbrush makeup has become essential in giving Hollywood actresses and news reporters their perfect looks. Today, makeup airbrushing has gained an enormous popularity among people like you and I and is no longer used just in the film or TV industry.
The requirements for airbrush makeup are unique compared to other types of airbrushing. All makeup must be airbrushed at less than 20psi to prevent air bubbles from forming in the blood vessels that could cause serious health risk. Ideally, airbrush makeup is applied at around 10psi to ensure the safety of the “models”. Therefore, an airbrush that atomizes well at low pressure is paramount.
Besides low pressure, a makeup airbrush should spray silicon-based and water-based foundations or blush well. Since these makeup pigments are heavier, the ideal airbrush nozzle size is 0.35mm. If you will be spraying glitters, you should not use airbrushes that are less than 0.35mm. The glitter particles will clog the smaller nozzles. For most makeup applications, the artists are only working with a few drops of colors. A gravity feed airbrush will ensure the most efficient use of the paints.
The airbrush that we recommend for airbrush makeup is Hobbipen G535-B Pro. The G535-B is a 0.35mm gravity-feed low-pressure airbrush. Its 0.35mm nozzle works great with most airbrush foundations or blush and sprays glitters. The specially designed gravity feed cup is perfect for even one or two drops of paint. The G535-B is engineered to spray at extreme low pressure and low air flow. This airbrush atomizes most foundations & blush well at 10psi with only four to five litre per minute of air. In short, the G535-B Pro is an ideal makeup airbrush.
The air compressors that we recommend for airbrush makeup are HobbiAir Mini Pro and Cube Pro. The Mini Pro is an ultra compact (4”x 4”x 2”) compressor runs on either its rechargeable battery or plug-in power. At only 0.88lb (0.4kg), it is extremely portable. The Cube Pro is more powerful and versatile, but it does need a plug-in power source. Either model will fit the needs of the most demanding makeup artists.

Art & Illustration
By Hobbipen Airbrush
There is a saying that artists are limited only by their imagination. We believe artists are limited by the tools available to transform their inspiration into artworks, especially in the pre-airbrush era. The advent of modern airbrushes has allowed artists to expand these limits. Airbrushes enable commercial artists and illustrators to create highly rendered images and a high level of realism. The new generation airbrushes can be used with almost any medium and technique made them extremely versatile and wonderful tools to have in the artists’ arsenal.
For airbrush illustration and art, most artists have different airbrushes for detailed, general and background airbrushing to get the optimal effects. The ideal airbrushes need to provide precise control from thin to wide lines and spray efficiently at low pressure to reduce overspray. Good airbrushes need to be easy to operate, clean and maintain.
Hobbipen G530-C Pro 0.3mm airbrush is probably one of the most versatile airbrush on the market. This 0.3mm airbrush is engineered to spray extreme fine lines that are comparable to most 0.2mm airbrushes. At the same time, the G530-C could perform larger scale operations. With the 0.3mm design, this airbrush could work with most paints like water-based acrylic without reduction. If your budget is tight for only one airbrush, the G530-C will be the perfect choice.
For superb detail work, we recommend Hobbipen G520-B or G520-A Pro 0.2mm airbrush. Both airbrushes are great for super thin lines and atomized well at low air pressure. For background airbrushing, we recommend Hobbipen B550-D Pro 0.5mm airbrush. With 0.5mm nozzle and two large cups, it is ideal for covering and blending larger areas, and it will work with heavier paints.
The air compressors that we recommend are HobbiAir Tower, Twin or Power Pro. All three compressors are equipped with air tanks to ensure consistent and uninterrupted air flow. Both illustrators and artists will appreciate their powerful and quiet motors. Their automatic shutoff feature is a bonus to provide true silent air and extent the operating time.
"For fine art illustration, I use paints with very fine pigments. So, my choice is Hobbipen G520-B Pro. Since I got this airbrush, it is like my best friend and never failed me for detail works."

Custom Automotive
By Hobbipen Airbrush
Automotive airbrushing is the art to spray murals, graphics, and other artwork on automobiles, motorcycles and helmets. Thanks to the reality shows such as Overhaulin’, American Chopper and Rides, hot rod custom airbrushing has gained worldwide popularity in recent years. Automotive airbrushing is considered one of the most difficult fields in airbrushing, but it is also one of the most rewarding. In general, custom automotive artists are more experienced and prefer higher-end airbrushing equipment. Automotive airbrush artists are also known as custom or kustom automotive painters.
Although modern water-based automotive paints are gaining popularity, most traditional automotive paints are still solvent-based. Therefore, automotive painters often require airbrushes with Teflon needle packing to apply solvent-based paints. For detail work, gravity feed airbrushes usually work best for spraying fine lines. If you need to spray larger areas, the bottom feed airbrushes with larger nozzle size will handle the jobs better. We don’t recommend using low-end airbrushes for automotive airbrushing since unintentional splatters will cost extra hours of unnecessary work.
All Hobbipen 500 Pro series airbrushes are equipped with Teflon needle packing to handle solvent-based automotive paints. The 500 Pro series are built to the highest standard with smooth trigger action and will not produce unintentional splatters.
The best all-around airbrush is Hobbipen G530-C Pro 0.3mm gravity feed airbrush. The ability of the G530-C to spray super thin lines comparable to most 0.2mm airbrushes often surprises the artists who used it for the first time. As a 0.3mm airbrush, the G530-C is also great for larger scale works. The versatility of the G530-C makes it a popular choice among automotive artists, especially the true flame guys.
For extreme detailing, we recommend Hobbipen G520-B Pro 0.2mm gravity feed airbrush. The G520-B Pro is light and atomize even finer for fine controlled shade. For larger spray need, Hobbipen B550-D Pro 0.5mm bottom feed airbrush does the job well with its larger nozzle and paint bottles. If you want to get better looks of your works while airbrushing, Hobbipen S535-C Pro 0.35mm side feed airbrush will fit your needs. Since it has a side mounted cup, you could see directly over the nozzle and spray upward without spilling.
The air compressors that we recommend for automotive airbrushing are HobbiAir Tower, Twin or Power Pro. All three compressors are equipped with air tanks to ensure consistent and uninterrupted air flow. Custom painters will appreciate their powerful and quiet motors. Their automatic shutoff feature is a bonus to provide true silent air and extent the operating time.
"Hobbipen G530-C Pro is a very universal airbrush. I spray very thick water-based automotive paints, and I find the G530-C airbrush works particularly well. The airbrush is great for both detail and background spraying. Its trigger feels as soft as a sponge and it is very comfortable even for long hours of work."

Fish Carving
By Ron Bailey
For the fish carver, the airbrush is the ideal tool for applying paint to the carving. The subtle blending of colours found on a live fish can be fairly easily duplicated by the airbrusher, with some experience.
Most fish carvers use water acrylic paint, which is safer and more convenient to use than lacquer. However, acrylic paint must be thinned to proper viscosity for it to spray well, especially important for detail work.
I would recommend an airbrush with a larger nozzle size, especially for carvers with limited experience. With the larger nozzle size, the correct viscosity is less critical and there will be less clogging of the nozzle.
The Hobbipen G535-B Pro with the 0.35 mm nozzle would be an excellent choice. It also has a top mounted paint cup large enough for most tasks and can be cleaned quickly for change of colours.
Overspray is a real concern when painting fish with an airbrush. The best way to limit overspray is to use a shield or reduce air pressure. All Hobbipen airbrushes can be used with low pressure and still produce excellent results. For detail painting, the airbrush should be operated at the lowest pressure possible and still spray as desired.
The Hobbipen airbrushes are all double action, internal mix, which offers the most control and finest sprays. Double action airbrushes operate by depressing the trigger completely to release air and pull back on trigger (while depressed) to release paint. Amount of paint applied is determined by how far back you pull the trigger. This gives you the ability to paint non-stop to increase or decrease paint flow simply by how much you pull the trigger back or push it forward, providing much more control than the single action airbrush.
Internal mix is a type of airbrush where the paint is atomized inside the airbrush tip. Airbrushes with a needle running through the airbrush are internal mix and are the most common airbrush.
There are three ways paint can be delivered into the airbrush. Gravity feed airbrushes have a top mounted paint cup from which paint is drawn into the airbrush. These airbrushes tend to operate more easily at lower air pressure, than siphon feed airbrushes. Bottom feed airbrushes such as the Hobbipen B550-D Pro, siphon paint from a jar mounted under the airbrush and enables the user to change colours quickly.
The Hobbipen G520-A Pro gravity feed airbrush with the 0.2 mm nozzle is a good choice for very detailed work. Small quantities of paint can be easily added to the airbrush and visibility over the airbrush to the work is excellent. Where a larger volume of paint is required for detail spraying, then consider the Hobbipen G520-B Pro. For spraying larger projects or several carvings at one time, the Hobbipen G530-C Pro or the S535-C Pro are well suited.
Side-feed airbrushes siphon paint from a small cup mounted on the side of the airbrush. The advantage of these airbrushes is the visibility and good paint supply.
Hobbipen airbrushes provide a wide range of nozzle sizes to choose from; 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.35 mm, and 0.5 mm. A larger nozzle size will allow a larger volume of paint to exit the airbrush, while a smaller nozzle size is designed for less paint volume and finer detail painting. Remember that, with a larger volume of paint spray, there is chance of a larger mistake in painting.
In summary, the airbrusher has a good variety of Hobbipen airbrushes to choose from. Their quality and performance is equal to or better than higher priced airbrushes on the market. I highly recommend the Hobbipen brand of airbrush to either the beginning carver or the master carver.
